New UBC Arts Student Centre design revealed
UBC’s highly anticipated new Arts Student Centre is back, with a new location and a new design.
The Arts Student Centre was originally slated for The Bosque, a treed area between the former Student Union Building (SUB) and East Mall, but community backlash over the proposed felling of several trees necessitated a new location for the centre.
The new location meant a new building, which will be three storeys, including society offices, study and recreational spaces, and an art gallery.
The architect remains the same, Leckie Studio Architecture + Design Inc.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2020, with completion by summer 2021.
The project will be coordinated with the development of Brock Commons Phase 2, which will include 600 new student beds in two towers situated between the Peter A. Allard School of Law and Brock Hall.
